Faith in Hebrews 11 — Steffen Jenkins Sermon Review

I’ve spent a lot of time in Hebrews 11. It’s one of my favorite passages. It is a constant force for stirring my thought and affections.

I’d like to recommend a fresh perspective on the chapter (at least it was to me when I first heard it).

Steffen Jenkins was my Old Testament professor at Union School of Theology. I delighted in his class, and I’ve delighted in his take on Hebrews 11. His exegesis brings some light to some parts of the text I’ve missed.

Steffen’s insistence is that what God promises, He delivers. That God not only created the world, but He created history. We believe God’s promises because what He is going to do in the future is real. Future history isn’t uncertain — it’s as certain as the past! And so, like those listed in the chapter, our faith rests on certainty. It isn’t a blind leap on a vague hope somewhere far away. It is a certain reliance in the God who is near, and who has shown Himself trustworthy.

Next time you have the time and interest to do a little study on Hebrews 11, I recommend Steffen Jenkin’s twin sermons on it, linked below.
