People dream of freedom, but long for slavery.
As Jeremy Boreing explains, it’s not true that people desire freedom more than anything else.
The devil keeps the world enslaved out of fear of death (Hebrews 2:15). Sometimes that fear manifests as avoidance of the important things of life and death. Sometimes that manifests as hedonism. Sometimes that manifests as man-made religion. In the West today, it manifests itself as a desire for safety, as it has for most of history in most locations.
“Send us back to Egypt, we were safe there!” That idol of safety, the desire to never die or face discomfort, drives the heart to slavery.
It did during the COVID lockdowns, when the censorship of dissenting expert voices were silenced. It did during the mask and vaccine mandates, when hundreds of thousands of health workers were fired worldwide for not doing what they thought was dangerous to themselves and their patients. And it does today, when Fauci sits pleading the fifth because he assisted in the murder millions of babies in the womb via vaccine induced miscarriages.
Humans would rather lose their lives in slavery risking “nothing,” than face freedom risking death.
Freedom means you actually have to take responsibility for you children. It means that when you tell them not to bow to peer pressure, you don’t either. So when every other child has an iPhone in school because their parents let them, YOU are the exception. You aren’t waiting for government to do your parenting for you. When all the other parents are doing what’s detrimental to their kids, you don’t. That, unlike Adam, when your child is mocked for doing the wise thing at your direction, YOU take the heat, and bear the weight to support them and defend them.
Great wealth or a lack of it is not the source of enslavement, which some who call themselves “conservatives” will say in the coming decade. It’s not man as noble, or man as savage, or man as noble-savage. It’s man without God, who is revealed in the face of Jesus Christ.
Freedom, understood in Christ, doesn’t mean facing down death along. It means that, for the first time in your life, you don’t face death alone. For the first time, you don’t face death in a crowd of people all equally enslaved to the same fear.
Living in freedom facing death with Christ is far better than living enslaved to fear facing death and enslavement alone.
