The Devil’s Dichotomy

Report: Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) paid Christian Organizations to produce Anti-AI content.

There is a dichotomy that has been set before us when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. Either AI will kill us all, or we can have the government regulate the industry so that it will not kill us all. Ah, the devil’s favourite kind of dichotomy! One that ignores God’s Word, and sets our hope on safety rather than in the freedom of following God!

This blog has written extensively on the dangers of AI on a personal, spiritual, cultural, and social levels. We have tried to position this blog outside of this false dichotomy. This is becoming more difficult, however, as the dichotomy has now absorb almost all Christian conversations around AI.

The choice between two tyrannies is constantly set before us: the tyranny of a humanity-deficient Artificial Super Intelligence, or a benevolent (though flawed) coalition of world governments. We have been hearing this for over a decade, and now the question pervades nearly every podcast that raises the question of AI.

We, of course, reject this dichotomy. We want to see it as it is: A deal with the devil. We know how the world will end. Not by the hand of AI, but with the return of Christ. And we know we ought to have no fear of the one who holds the power of death, the devil, so as to give him the power he craves.

In short, we will choose neither tyranny, thank you! The terrible power of AI should not be handed to the government and a few select companies (see Ben Shapiro’s video below). At the same time, we must be far more vigilant as to the effects AI has on our souls.

How did we get to this point? How has this dichotomy circulated so broadly? Here’s one reason:

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America took $105,000 from FLI. They credit their “red lines on AI” to “a grant from the Future of Life Institute.” The Gospel Coalition received $200,000 for a podcast called “Silicon Spiritualities,” without disclosing their sponsor. They later barred their writers from using AI to research, write, or edit. The World Council of Churches took $100,000 to write its “red lines.” The Mormon nonprofit Faith Matters took $299,000 for a “Magna Carta of AI.”

We are going to get played, if we are not extremely careful. The devil wants to get his way, and he has set before us two wrong choices – a false dichotomy. We can give him reign over us by accepting AI as an inevitable societal and spiritual harm, or we can give him this power by delegative to the government and a few select companies a technology greater than anything else this world has ever seen. Do neither! I beg you.
