Last Battles

Tash is only another name for Aslan. All that old idea of us being right and the Calormenes wrong is silly. We know better now. The Calormenes use different words but we all mean the same thing. Tash and Aslan are only two different names for you know Who. That’s why there can never be any quarrel between them. Get that into your heads, you stupid brutes. Tash is Aslan: Aslan is Tash.

“Tashlan, fool”

~ Rishda Tarkaan to the Ape in CS Lewis’ The Last Battle

It is a remarkable thing to find such a stupid thing pushed by so many. Not unexpected. CS Lewis expected it decades ago – he even saw it himself. The alliance between postmodernism and Islam is strong, and stronger than it has probably ever been.

Of course, a day is coming when there will be no more nonsense. Then the Critical Theorists will have to do with those they made their masters.

There was no nonsense about “Tashlan” now.

~ CS Lewis, The Last Battle

It is the height of stupidity to say that YAHWEH and Allah are one and the same. How a lie like this can be adopted should be a wonder to marvel at. “Tashlan” – such an evil, obvious, hideous joke of a lie. That is what Lewis intends one to think when reading his novel. And yet, here we are, in the real world.

One wants to give the benefit of a doubt that one would give to the Ass Puzzle (namely, the excuse of sheer stupidity). Yet, I do not think that this ought to be extended to the wonton liars themselves. Some evil works in these ideologies. It shows no mercy, and should be shown none.

Like lambs being led to the slaughter, we need gentle eagerness to win any poor soul we meet back from this lie. It will be easy enough. It is the most explicit Satan can be in his lying, and so the most explicit opportunity we have. The devil has opened up his flanks, so ferocious in his desire to swallow poor souls – so eager to take the heart and mind, and win a victory from which few if any return. If he had invited us to proclaim the Gospel it would not be such a perfect opportunity. It is our perfect opening to strike hard and fast, and send his forces flying in terror at the Word.

The opening is for us to proclaim Christ. To speak of the greatest mysteries of God, revealed in Him, namely, His Triunity. We can speak plainly of grace, of justification, of God’s way and desire to reconcile sinners. This is our task. And every time it is a Last Battle. Whether they will worship the One true God, or a god like “Tashlan.”

  1. Amen to all of this!! C.S. Lewis was ahead of his time for sure.

I have been reading a book on Islam and it pointed out that many “moderate” Muslims are politically left-leaning and this makes sense in light of both of these ideologies being very much OK to squelch free speech. Your point about the alliance between Islam and post-modernism made me think of this.
