Trust like Jesus

In Hebrews 2:12-15, the argument is made that Christ was a man like us, because he lived by faith like we do (which the angels do not). To this end, the apostle brings in these words prophesied of Him, as spoken by Him of Himself, “I will put my trust in Him,” as one proof that He was a man like us. Now for what was it that He trusted God? By the context it appears to be this: that He should be the salvation of His “brothers” and “children,” and raise up a church to God to praise Him in . . . Christ trusted God for Himself, and for all His elect.

Thomas Goodwin, Assurance: Our Confidence in Christ, Edited by Kevin Hay, p. 22-23

We are like God the Father most when we love Jesus. And we are like Jesus most when we trust His Father as our Father in Him.

The point of what Goodwin is saying is this: Jesus did not come to face hell on earth haphazardly. He came with all the assured trust in His Father that He would carry Him through to death and raise Him up beyond it, achieving the goal for which He died, the salvation of His Bride.

Therefore, when we go to face those days that feel like hell on earth to us, we can do this trusting God just as Jesus did. We go with His Spirit, and with David say, “you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.” And take heart in this, that “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things” (Romans 8:32)? He is our God, and has proven Himself fully trustworthy, even down into death itself.

Let the trust of Jesus lead us to the love of the Father for Jesus, and in Him for ourselves and all who are the Father’s.

Over the open door of God’s household is the blood of the Lamb. All who enter there are safe, forever. For God, who once gave His own heart to retrieve for His Son a bride, will not soon let Him or His spouse feel any sense of insecurity under His roof. He is a jealous God, and would do all to love us.

Today, trust God with Jesus, and let the love of the Father floor our hearts, and spur us on in today’s labours of love.
