From people like us comes Jesus, the Christ, to people like us. God’s grace overcoming the stain of sin![1]

That’s a thought you can think on for a long, long time! I’ve worked with a lot of people, and most don’t go all in on whatever their job is in a given moment. Not Jesus. When God comes to do a job (if I can be so crass), He jumps right into it, fully dedicated, and fully capable!
When He comes to be truly human in order to save us, He doesn’t sidestep any of it. His whole lineage has a giant neon morally dubious question mark hanging over it. God did not skip the mess of the Old Testament. He worked in it all so that we could have our perfect Saviour – truly human, messy family and all. Truly human, like us… for us.
God didn’t line up the arrival of His Son with a red carpet through the pages of the Old Testament. Instead the red line was that of the scarlet stain of sin. Far more imperfect people than paragons of virtue. Far more people like us than heroes in stained glass windows.[2]

What depth does this perspective on Jesus’ wider family give to the Christmas story?
