“The heart of the human problem is the human heart!”[1] Dead to God, spiritually dead on the inside, producing the dead decayed fruits of hearts in hatred toward God – that’s a big problem! It’s why we need more than just a plan. God doesn’t give us a plan for us to accomplish in order to get ourselves out of our mess. Equally true, God doesn’t just give us a plan to trust in. God’s plan is always pointing to a Person.
Christ comes to win our affections – He storms the hostile ramparts of our hearts, rips apart the doors of settled opposition to Him, melting our hearts and moulding us in a trusting relationship with God. That’s what Jesus does in the New Covenant:
Sins forgiven, living hearts, transformed motivation, the Spirit given, restored relationship with God – all because of the coming of the Messiah, Himself the covenant between God and humanity.
