Let’s Chat: Pleased to Dwell 4

Anticipating a prophet who can represent God to the people is great, but what about someone who can represent the sinful people to God?

Hannah was a poor farmer’s wife. She was barren and desperately wanted a child. The elderly priest [Eli] couldn’t spot piety when it knelt praying before him, but God heard her prayer.

He will be a faithful priest, unlike Eli.

Jesus is the good priest. Unlike the Old Covenant priests, the Priest is be faithful to God’s heart. Eli thought he saw a drunken woman (1 Samuel 1:13), but God heard the secret cry from her heart.

When Jesus was telling people what true prayer looks like, He used the image of closing the door and praying in secret (Matthew 6:6). Hannah prayed in the secrecy of her heart, and was heard. Eli, so busy about the outward appearance of the corrupted priestly line, missed the trust hidden in Hannah’s heart. Not Jesus. Jesus saw the heart cry of Hannah and represented her to His Father.
