SNAP, Crackle, and Pop into Church

In 2020, James White made the following statement about what was and is currently happening in our society:

The greatest social tool being used right now to change society, destroy liberty, and move everything toward a global socialist technocracy is the claim of public health.

Amongst Christians, that’s the love your brother, love your neighbor mantra. Everything now is that everything has to be avoid harm, avoid harm, avoid harm, safe, safe, safe, safe, safe, safe, safe. This is the new world in which we live. And the medical claims are the most powerful tool being used.

“Well, you can’t say anything against transgenderism. You’ll cause people to commit suicide.” You can use that for anything. Any behavior you want to protect. You can’t say anything bad about people that are attracted to kids. They might commit suicide. There have been lots of them who’ve done that. You terrible person, you’re killing people. See? Works real easily, doesn’t it? It only works now because we have raised an entire two generations of safists. People who take no risks, who live in a bubble, wrapped in plastic wrap.

In the past half-decade, Western governments have squeezed the church almost entirely out of the work of charity. Right now, in America, we have the opportunity to reclaim a lot of territory.

Lots of churches have been doing work, both in the USA and UK (my contexts), to truly help people out of poverty, convict people of theft, and free people from pauperism through the Gospel. Right now, we need to double our efforts.

We do not know how long SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) will be halted, or when EBTs (Electronic Benefit Transfers) will resume. We have the God given opportunity to actually help these people enslaved in this system, and some in desperate need of help. We can offer them community, dignity, warm and welcoming care, and most importantly the Gospel.

According to the account “Hitler Hated Christ” on X, a woman called into a church expecting to hear that they were not doing any charity work. The answer she got surprised here. Watch:

I hope that this can be the experience of those who check in on our churches – with a bit more Gospel centrality than what was communicated in this phone call.

“What can I do?”

For some Christians, it may mean rethinking whether you accept welfare from the state, and that may require sacrifice on your part.

In the USA, there are many options, however I love most local churches accomplishing what they can independently.

In the UK, CAP (Christians Against Poverty) is doing a wonderful job helping people escape poverty and achieve freedom from pauperism.
