It is the glory of man that he is utterly dependent on God. Apart from God human life is unintelligible and wretched. We are not able to understand ourselves. Our whole existence is a dark problem, bewildering and oppressive, until, beholding ourselves in the mirror of God, we say, in the full presence of the most High: “Thou, God, seest me.”
