“Jesus knew full well what it was like to walk in darkness and see no light.”[1]
And He experienced that for you.

I guess this is the season for needed niche podcasts! This week, I’ve been referencing the new Biblical Preaching podcast[2] in other blog posts (coming soon). In this post, I’d like to mention another startup podcast called Blind Faith, by Torch Trust.
Torch Trust is an organization that seeks to help blind people and those struggling with their sight to receive the care and help they need,[3] and to help them see Jesus through the Gospel. A friend of mine at church works for Torch, and mentioned this podcast recently. It’s a great goal – to give personal, relatable, God-centered testimonies through conversation of what it’s like to experience blindness.
It looks like each episode will be around 20 minutes long. It’s conversational. It’s doesn’t get too heavy, but retains a sense of realness. I’ve listened to the first two episodes. A conversation with Trevor, and a conversation with Emma. To keep this post short, I just want to write about what Emma said.
Emma spoke of her practical struggles, and her journey of being blind from birth. She also spoke of how the things that affect us in life are complicated. She has not wanted to under-blame or over-blame sight. She wants to have an accurate view of herself – what is true of her because of blindness, and what is true of her because of her personality. Little ways and big ways, God has helped her. She takes things to God, whether big things or small things, because she believes that God cares for her. And she knows that, though she has been blind from birth, blindness does not define her, but Jesus does.
It’s a really beautiful testimony. And it brought me to Psalm 3 and to a quote from the preacher Charles Spurgeon, which I’ll put below the next three paragraphs:
In Psalm 3:6, the Psalmist is surrounded. He doesn’t deny their number or their strength (v.1), or their taunting words (v.2). Yet he sees his God as his shield, the one who lifts his eyes up above his circumstances (v.3). He cries to the Lord, and knows that God will stoop down low to answer him – even him, in the middle of his situation (v.4).
Trusting in His good God, the Psalmist lies down to sleep (v.5). Most of us don’t think about the possibility of not waking up when we lie down to sleep. Others of us do. The Psalmist had good reason to suppose that he might not wake up – but God gave his lifted eyes a holy confidence to close.
At such seasons as these, the reasonable men of the world, those who walk by sight and not by faith, will think it reasonable enough that the Christian should be afraid; they themselves would be very low if they were in such a predicament. Weak believers are now ready to make excuses for us, and we are only too ready to make them for ourselves; instead of rising above the weakness of the flesh, we take refuge under it, and use it as an excuse. But let us think prayerfully for a little while, and we shall see that it should not be thus with us [as Emma said]. To trust only when appearances are favorable, is to sail only with the wind and tide, to believe only when we can see. Oh! let us follow the example of the psalmist [and believers like Emma], and seek that unreservedness of faith which will enable us to trust God, come what will, and to say as he said, “I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.”[4]
May God grant us trust in Him.
