Thank You, Mark Steyn

Mark Steyn on the Importance of Freedom of Speech

“This is the biggest issue of our time. Freedom of speech, because it’s the freedom to argue for all the other freedoms.” ~ Mark Steyn [1]

I first came across Mark Steyn while listening to him on the Rush Limbaugh program. I didn’t look forward to any other guest speaker on that program. Mark is always witty, quick, humorous, respectful and, when he needed to be and truth was on his side, ferocious.

Mark has the incredible ability to take some of the gloomiest, most awful events in the world, cut through the fog and present it as it really is, and yet bring a sunshiny disposition to it all that can’t help but make me smile. A simple turn of phrase from Mark could turn my heart away from the misery of it all, to being glad in the fact that I wasn’t alone in what I thought about the misery of it all. Mark’s style is unparalleled in its humor, having quality I can’t describe. A perfect mixture of truth and humor.

I had hoped, after Rush passed, that if anyone was going to take up the throne behind the Golden EIB microphone, it would be Mark. That didn’t happen, but I still track of Mark’s work.

Steyn has likely been one of the most persecuted political commenters in the past decade. The legal torments he’s been dragged through have been unjust and insane. And tomorrow, January 16, 2024, he faces the big one — or as Mark puts it, “After twelve years of pseudo-jurisprudential bollocks in the city where justice goes to die, jury selection in Mann vs Steyn will finally commence in Courtroom 518 of the DC Superior Court tomorrow, January 16th, at 9.30am, just in time for my fourth heart attack.” [2] So what better day on which to write to him, thank him for his work, and recommend that you go look him up at SteynOnline as well!

Dear Mark,

I’ll be praying for you as you once again enter that “awful, ghastly, portentous, self-important ‘citadel of democracy’ ‘beacon to the world.’”

As an encouragement to you I’ll say only this: you’re in good company. There are many who have been mistreated by the current regime, pressed down under the reigning ideologies, and persecuted by the unjust justice system currently doing its best to kill liberty once and for all all across this land. It is no light thing, but it is no dishonor to be slapped for the truth.

So keep on! Take that sunshiny disposition to the wretched festering mess of immorality we call a Capital, and come out the other side — even if somebody else has to wheel you out! My prayer for you is that, despite the best attempts of the lunatics, justice will prevail, and you will be vindicated. But even more fundamentally, as a matter infinitely more important: that you would find Jesus Christ to be a good Savior.

Thank you for your work down through the years. I look forward to many more years (full of laughs) of SteynOnline!

Yours truly,

Humbled.
