Woke Definitions

While Wokeness, Critical Theory, and Social Justice Theory are by no means new world views and ideologies, many struggle with understanding exactly what they are and what the words used in them mean. This is largely because these ideologies are a foundation up, top down, inside out revolution of thought. They demand an entirely new structure and system for thinking and living than what would be considered traditional.

Definitions matter. And the systems in which words are invested with meaning matter. It matters that Christians try to seek to understand the world views and ideologies people believe. We need to think through the complex entirety of these ideologies, and not just in their simplistic parts, so that we know how to talk with people about them. We need to define where we stand, and know where others have defined where they stand. We can’t shrug off our responsibility to proclaim the Gospel because we want to be “compassionate.” Ultimately, we need to go back to the proper, Biblical definitions of these things. And we need to understand the systems of thought and of language developed by people who want to take others captive to these systems of thought that are sinful and demonic in origin (Colossians 2:8). To be loving in to know the truth and point out the lie for God to the benefit of others—not against them.

We need to do this because we proclaim Christ, “warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:28). We proclaim the Gospel to everyone, and we teach anyone who will listen with all wisdom, that Christ’s church might be mature in Him. We need to take everyone thought captive to obey Christ, and we need to destroy utterly every argument and lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God by the wisdom from above (James 3:17). Not with weapons of the flesh, but with God’s power to destroy strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). These ideologies, which have really become theologies, not only seek to destroy Christianity and Biblically grounded theology, but they are also destructive to humanity. We must take them, Christian or not, with infinite seriousness. It is true, not being woke isn’t enough. But for so many people, they’re going to have to start there because they’re already in it. And we’re going to have to show them the glory of Christ against the darkness of Critical Theory.
