Cultural Disunity in the United States and the Response of the Triune God
Throughout history, humanity has been united and divided by many various things and for many various causes. American culture in the year 2020 is no different in this respect. So far in the unfolding year Americans have witnessed disunity manifest and materialize on a vast and imposing scale, culturally and politically. Events such as the impeachment of the President of the United States and the global Covid-19 pandemic only heighten and increase the divide in America. The idea of that disunity being dissolved, and a common unity being established that is not full of wrath and hate seems unviable. Nothing appears competent to unify a relationally broken humanity.
Americans stand divided. But what is the disunity in America exactly, and is there a solution to it? The problems plaguing the country are complicated and ideological. The ideas of hegemony, critical race theory, and intersectionality are central to understanding this divide. These ideologies have enveloped the entirety of American cultural causing extreme polarization throughout society in considerations of ethnicity, politics, and entertainment. The consequences of such disunity and division are evident in the effort to impeach the President [now a first and second time attempt], in the shaping of the culture out of the pandemic, and in the movements rising out of the hostilities in America. But there is a solution to this disunity in the American culture and a response to these ideologies, and that solution is only what the Triune God of the Bible can offer. This paper will explore the ideologies which divide America, the pervasiveness of these ideologies throughout culture, the impact of these ideologies in societal events through cultural and political movements, and conclude with the one solution to this disunity: a Triune God who graciously created the universe, who is profoundly relational making every human in His image, and who graciously reconciles people to Himself.
